Foundation Donor Profile:  The Quartermaine Family

9/1/2012

A long-time resident of the Gull Lake area, Frank Quartermaine was a big supporter of the Gull Lake Community—especially the school district and its athletics program.   Both of his children, Kelly and Chris, graduated from Gull Lake High school, and now his grandsons are students at Gull Lake schools.  An athletics enthusiast, Mr. Quartermaine was a common sight in the community and at Gull Lake sporting events, supporting the athletics program through the Sports Boosters and cheering on the Gull Lake teams.

In August of 2010, Mr. Quartermaine passed away, and his family wanted to do something to honor his memory.  They decided that giving back was the best way to do that, so they established a scholarship in his name.  In lieu of flowers, they requested that donations at his funeral be sent to the Frank Quartermaine Memorial Student Athlete Scholarship, which they set up through the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation.  “It’s what our Dad wanted.  He loved Gull Lake sports and loved watching his grandsons participate in athletics.  He understood the importance of the balance between academics and athletics and encouraged them to do their best in both areas,” said Chris Quartermaine.

Administered by the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation, the scholarship provides $1,000 to a Gull Lake High School Senior, who meets specified academic, sports and character requirements.  “When we decided to set up this scholarship, The Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation was the first organization we considered,” said Kelly Quartermaine.  The Foundation has been administering scholarships for over 25 years. This year alone, it awarded 31 scholarships to Gull Lake students.

“It was a very easy process to set up the scholarship, and the way the Foundation helped us through the selection process made it very smooth,” commented Chris Quartermaine.  This is the third year the Frank Quartermaine scholarship will be awarded.  “It has been such an honor to be a part of providing this scholarship to these deserving student athletes—it really fits what my Dad was all about and what he represented,” stated Kelly Quartermaine.
