Sharing Three Cups of Tea Puts Spotlight on Gull Lake
Thank you to everyone who helped make Sharing Three Cups of Tea a big success!
On Thursday, Oct. 29 Greg Mortenson – humanitarian, former mountaineer and bestselling author of Three Cups of Tea – spoke to nearly all 2,800 students in Gull Lake Community Schools. Kindergarteners to middle schoolers to high school seniors had a chance to learn about his work and about education in other parts of the world. Mortenson’s visit was part of the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation Distinguished Speaker Series. The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize nominee shared with students his experiences building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan and his adventures and perspectives in this interesting time in our history.
Our ticketed event in the evening drew more than 2,000 people from the Kalamazoo area, Southwest Michigan and other parts of the state – even a couple from Wisconsin – to learn about “one man’s mission to promote peace – one school at a time.” It also gave Gull Lake Community Schools a chance to showcase our new high school, our commitment to excellence in education and the special opportunities we provide students in our district.
The success of this event was possible only with the hard work of more than 100 volunteers – who devoted countless hours during the summer and fall planning, organizing and preparing for the day.
We greatly appreciate the support of our many, many volunteers, the administration and staff of Gull Lake Community Schools, our sponsors, in-kind donors, local supporting businesses and other contributors. Thank you!
