The result? Not only did Katie win a gold medal at the regional level, but she also won a Gold Key at the 2012 national level. Katie was invited to Carnegie Hall in New York City for the awards ceremony, which featured Meryl Streep as the key note speaker. Mrs. Copp submitted a grant request to GLCSF that enabled Katie to attend the ceremony.
“It was so important for her to see artistic expression celebrated at that level,” said Jody Elms, Katie’s mother. “Being able to go to New York opened up a whole new world beyond Hickory Corners and really broadened her artistic vision.”
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers identifies teenagers with exceptional creative talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Other notable artists and writers who received the Award include: Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, John Lithgow, Andy Warhol, Ken Burns, John Baldessari, Truman Capote, and Sylvia Plath.
