Gull Lake Community School Foundation Sherman Lake Y/Middle School Experience
Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility are the core principles of the Sherman Lake Y Outdoor Center. When middle school teacher Kathy Schacher presented her idea for a Middle School Character Development Experience at the Sherman Lake Y, the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation gave her their full support!
The GLCS Foundation provided the key funding of over $23,000.00 to help send each Middle School Team — 6 in all — for a full day of training. The Positive Character Program is a program specifically designed for Gull Lake Middle School students. This pilot program, which took place during the first two weeks of school, is intended to help strengthen and embrace the consistent habits for building positive peer relations and a strength based culture within the Middle School.
During their day at the Sherman Lake Y, the students broke down into small groups and took part in 8 different activities. Each activity had a specific teaching goal such as: positive communication, problem solving, correcting mistakes, decision making, critical thinking and teamwork.
On her team’s day at the Camp, sixth grade teacher Mrs. Clancy, said; “This is such a wonderful experience! I can’t tell you how much the students are learning!” From the smiles, songs, and cheers, one could definitely tell the students enjoyed their day at Camp!
The GLCS Foundation is proud to be able to bring two of our community’s best resources, the Sherman Lake Y and the students of the Gull Lake Middle School, together in this terrific learning endeavor!
