Alumni in the Military

Katie (Roy) Miller
I graduated from GLHS in 2000 and went on to graduate from the United States Air Force Academy in 2005 with a BS in Management.  Upon graduation from USAFA, I was commissioned as a 2d Lt in the US Air Force. In July 2006 I married my best friend and fellow USAFA grad, John Miller. We both pinned on the rank of 1Lt in June 2007. We are stationed at Hanscom AFB, Ma where I work as an intelligence analyst for the Electronic Systems Center.

I'm pursuing a masters of science in business administration from Boston University. Currently, I am deployed to Balad Air Base, Iraq for a six month tour where I work as an analyst and force protection liaison for the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing combat intelligence cell.

Thank you for supporting our men and women in uniform!

I attended Basic Officer Leader Course training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma the summer after graduation. From there I traveled to Fort Lee, Virginia and trained as a Quartermaster Officer.

After completing all my training I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. I served as the support platoon leader for about a year and just recently began my new job as the Battalion S4. I am in charge of all logistic functions for my Battalion. I am married to David Sutton; he is also a lieutenant in the army and is currently training to fly helicopters. I pin on my 1LT rank November 27th. My email address is chelsea.sutton@us.army.mil

David Kenneth Haglund

I graduated from Gull Lake in 2000. In August 2004 I was commissioned a second lieutenantin the United States Marine Corps after earning a BS in Earth Sciences at the University of Michigan. In the spring of 2005, after six months of basic infantry training in Quantico, Virginia, I received orders to Naval Air Station Pensacola to begin pilot flight training.

From 2005-2007 I flew over 200 hours and became qualified in both the T-34C Turbo Mentor airplane andTH-57 Bell Jet Ranger helicopter. In January 2007 I received my wings of gold and was designated a Naval Aviator.

Following four months of training at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, I was designated a co-pilot in the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter in June, 2007.

Currently I am a pilot and communications officer with HMH-363 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, located in Kaneohe Bay on the island of Oahu. Here we fly the CH-53D Sea Stallion, one of the oldest helicopters currently flying in the Marine Corps.  With me is my wife, Lisa Haglund, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and our nine-month-old daughter, Isobel, who was born in Pensacola, Florida. We will be stationed in Hawaii until 2010.

I can provide more information if needed.  Attached is a picture of me with my aircraft.

It’s amazing to know many people from Richland who are or were in the Marine Corps. While in flight school I happened, by chance, to meet Eric Edzinger, class of 1996, who is now flying CH-53E Super Stallions in Miramar, California. Some other names I know include:
Rick Ruckstedder (2000), Trevor Parshel (2000), Michael and David Bacon (2000), Mike Mollo (2000), Phillip Brule (2001), and Brandon Marz (2004).

There are even more in the Army and Air Force!

Lastly, thank you and to everyone else who is recognizing the Gull Lake Alumni who have served, or are currently serving, in our Nation’s Armed Forces. It is support from people like you that make us truly proud to be serving our country and representing our hometowns. Whether it’s known or not, you are the
lifeblood which keeps us focused to successfully do our Nation’s bidding, in times of both hardship and triumph. Call me crazy but my wife and I can't wait to come back to Michigan when my contract ends in 2013.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

David Kenneth Haglund

Brandon Marz
I'm a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. My military occupational specialty (MOS) is Infantry Rifleman. I've been in for 3 years now, and I'm currently a squad leader, in charge of 12 other Marines.  Last year I spent 5 months in Asadabad, Afghanistan in the Kunar Province. There my unit conducted missions deep into the heart of Afghan mountains, searching villages for Taliban extremists, and trying to bring security and stability to the area.

Currently I am serving in Haqlaniyah, Iraq in the Al Anbar Province. Here we're in charge of conducting security patrols in order to disrupt enemy activity in the area.  The task at hand is a difficult one, but I believe we're making progress. My deployment will be over mid- to late-October, and I am truly looking forward to that.

Well, for now, that's all I have. If there are any questions or specifics you would like to know just send me an e-mail. Thanks again for the opportunity, and let Dana or myself know if you need any more pictures.

Thanks,

Brandon Marz

I’m actually in Iraq now. This is my second deployment in the last couple of years. We are in Ramadi on the West side of Iraq. My unit is part of the 3rd Infantry Division from Fort Stewart, GA. We are in our 9th month of deployment with about 6 months left to go. I’ve actually been in the Army since 1986, the year I graduated high school. I originally joined the United States Army Reserve as an enlisted Soldier and used that to partly fund my way through school although my parents funded 90 percent of that for me.

I attended WMU from 1988-1991 and then came on Active Duty in late 1991. My wife Kathy (she’s from Paw Paw) and I enjoyed our first assignment together at Fort Campbell, KY for about three years. We had our first child, Courtney, while we were there. Following Fort Campbell, we moved to Fort Polk, LA where we stayed for fours years and had our second child, Justin. In between there, I deployed for one year to Bosnia. Kathy got pregnant with Justin shortly after I returned from Bosnia. Funny how that happens.

Following Fort Polk, we moved to Dayton, OH. We stayed there for three years. At that time, I commanded a recruiting company and was promoted to the rank of Major. We then moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for a year to attend the Command and General Staff College. Following Fort Leavenworth, we moved to our current duty station at Fort Stewart, GA. We have been there now for just over three years. Unfortunately, I’ve been here for about 22 months of the 36 that we’ve been at Fort Stewart.

I was just recently selected to be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and if all things hold true, I should be promoted when we get home. I’ll get a decent picture that you can post, but before I do that, I need a haircut.

Thanks.
